Healthy eating

Establishing healthy eating habits to keep children in good shape for the rest of their lives is a key way to invest in their futures. Habits are ways of behaving which have become deep-seated and are therefore difficult to change, so they tend to stay with us for life. Young children who have healthy eating habits are therefore far less at risk of suffering from being overweight, obesity, eating disordered behaviour and body dissatisfaction.

Although initially parents and carers have responsibility for their child’s eating patterns and overall nutrition, early years settings can provide valuable opportunities to encourage children to extend their knowledge and experience of food and eating behaviours. The table below is adapted from the work of Rose, Gilbert and Richards (2016, pp.53–54); it illustrates how a range of activities involving food can provide opportunities for learning a wide range of skills.
